Sadie Segriff

Biography

Sadie Segriff is a creator, dancer and digital media artist raised in Whitehorse, Yukon. Place, water and territory have a significant impact on their identity. Sadie has spent years canoe tripping, following the river's path, capturing videos of the current and taking that movement into the body. Sadie’s work embodies the natural environment and their identity in relation to place and water. Their work brings the outside in and inside out, evoking reflection and highlighting the intricate connections we share with the natural environment around us.

Artistic Statement

Inspired by rivers in the north, Current Untold explores our relationship with water's duality as a life source and a force of change. Sadie paddled the Stikine River this past July and was inspired by following a river from its headwaters to where the river's mouth opens to the ocean. Sadie embodies the movement of water, in stillness, recirculation, repetition, suspension, sloshing, force, spirals, and traction. Current Untold explores the contrast of necessity and danger by representing external effects of water on the body, as well as focusing on our internal current and need for water in our everyday lives. These movement qualities are combined with projected videos to reflect on how water shapes our lives.

Videos were captured of the Yukon River, the Traditional Territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and the Stikine River in British Columbia and Alaska, the Traditional Territory of the Tahltan First Nation, the Tsetsaut Skii km Lax Ha, Kaska Dene, and Tlingit peoples.
