Intensifs

From February 23 to May 10, 2024, Joshua Yates will be hosting contemporary dance sessions aimed at intermediate and advanced dancers. These classes are scheduled for every Friday, running from 6 to 8pm.

Joshua's classes start with a somatic approach, incorporating exercises inspired by yoga to gently yet dynamically prepare the body for movement. The class then proceeds to explore methods for enhancing the efficiency of transitioning between standing and floorwork, drawing from elements of Breaking and contemporary techniques. Subsequently, these diverse approaches and techniques are further enriched through improvisational tasks within a supportive context, with the overarching objective of nurturing each individual's unique intentions and artistic expression.

About Joshua

Joshua Yates is a contemporary and urban dancer, choreographer, and teacher. London born but raised in Germany, Joshua started training in Ballet from a young age and proceeded to training in urban and later contemporary dance.

In 2020, they graduated from London Contemporary Dance School with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance. During their training, Joshua had the opportunity to develop their choreographic voice by creating and producing dance pieces both within and outside the course’s curriculum. Their solo creation ‘square1’ was showcased as part of the graduation show and performed at The Placetheatre in London in summer 2019.

Since training, Joshua has worked with Julian Nichols’ Bodies in Action Dance, performed for, and collaborated with Paddington Arts, and taught dance and yoga in different dance schools and colleges such as Rambert Studios. Joshua also produced their own show in the winter of 2021,
showcasing 3 of their new works. Their solo ‘Final score’ and duet ‘The Rainy-Sneakers conclusion’, were performed again in London in the spring of 2022.

After a workshop with Rubberband Dance Group in December 2021, Joshua returned to Montreal to take part in the ‘Big Bang’ program. During this time, they created a solo work titled ‘Dedans’ that since has been featured in some of their latest dance productions in London and was performed at
B12 Festival for Contemporary Dance in Berlin this past summer.

They currently work both in Montreal and London.
