Lili Malo

Biography

Lili Malo is a contemporary dance artist based in Montreal whose practice is deeply informed by a background in health sciences. Fascinated by movement anatomy, biomechanics, and injury prevention, she believes that understanding the body is inseparable from the art form itself. This scientific perspective grounds her approach in a rigorous and methodical physical exploration.

Originally from Drummondville, Lili began dancing at Compagnie Danse en Équilibre, where she grew up in an environment that valued self-improvement, discipline, and kindness. After completing a DEC in dance and an AEC in dance teaching at Cégep de Drummondville, she continued her training with a year at Dance Arts Institute in Toronto. At the same time, she pursued numerous formative experiences through workshops with companies such as Kidd Pivot, Ballets Jazz Montréal and PPS Danse, and engaged in intensive programs like BIG BANG, where she is currently developing a personal creative project.

For Lili, contemporary dance allows for bodily introspection that grounds the mind in the present moment. Driven by a search for beauty, her artistic universe unfolds through an aesthetic that is both balletic and contemporary. With precision, her work strives to combine rational structure, a finely tuned body, and clear forms within a medium as exploratory, subjective, and vast as dance. Lili nurtures a constant duality between control and release, between scientific rigor and expressive freedom, thereby shaping a unique and thoughtful artistic signature.

Artistic approach

Through this creation, I offer the blondness of my hair as an entry point into my search for freedom. Hair, first intimate at its root, can be combed, braided, tied, shaped along its length. It alters the silhouette, transforms posture, and influences a state of bodily presence sometimes tense, sometimes released. In the shower, hair becomes damp, soaked. Water changes appearances; it washes away the body's tensions. In a final swirl, the last blond strand will stretch out fully.
